Sheliuto Mikola - Ukrainian artist

Shelyuto Nikolai (also - Sheliuto Mikola, Mykola) - was born on February 22, 1906 in the village of Glukhovka, Mogilev province, Gomel uyezd, Pohotskaya volost (Belarus).
A classic of Odessa painting, his work is an integral part of the culture of southern Ukraine. The artist gained his artistic authority through the organic connection of eye, hand and sensation, which gives his work a mysterious energy.
More than 80 paintings are kept in museum collections of Ukraine - Museum of Ukrainian Art (Kiev), Directorate of Exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture (Kiev), State Art Museum (Lviv, Odessa, Chernivtsi), State Museum of Ukrainian Art (Kharkiv). Also - works of art by Shelyuto Mykola are available in private collections in Ukraine and European countries.
At the initial stage of creativity used half-cubism, half-constructivism and continued the line of southern impressionism of Ukrainian artists. Often he wrote a la prima - in one go and in one breath. Refinement and simplicity - the author's handwriting of weighted works of art by Mykola Sheliuto.
From 1925 to 1931 he studied at the Odessa Art Polytechnic (since 1928 - Odessa Art Institute). He was taught by Pavel Gavrilovich Volokidin. Worked as a carpenter, master of carpentry shop, stage machinist of the opera theater, mathematics teacher in a rural school.
Since 1936 participated in art exhibitions. The first personal exhibition of works - in the 4th year of polytechnicum. Then - personal exhibitions in Kiev, Kharkov and Odessa. In 1938 he was admitted to the Union of Soviet Artists of the USSR.
From 1937 to 1967 he taught painting and drawing at the Odessa State Art School.
In 1941 mobilized in the Red Army, returned to Odessa in 1944. Since 1945 he was elected a member of the Board, Deputy Chairman (1946-1958), Chairman (1956) of the Odessa organization of the Union of Artists.
Since 1978 member of the Republican Board of the Union of Artists, 1957-1978. - Chairman of the Art Council of the Khudfond.
From 1946 to 1978 - a delegate of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd All-Union Congresses of the Union of Artists, all plenums and congresses of the Republican Board of the Union of Artists.
In 1968 he was awarded the Order “Badge of Honor”, medals of the USSR, the honorary title of “Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR”.
February 6, 1984 the artist died, buried in Odessa.
